Message of the President

There is no health without mental health, yet mental health is no universal constant—it is a living narrative inscribed by culture, and to sever the mind from its ancestral lexicon is to treat a symptom while silencing the story that alone gives suffering its name and healing its shape.

Cultural psychiatry offers essential perspectives on how culture shapes the expression of distress, pathways to care, resilience, healing, and relationships between individuals and health systems. As migration, displacement, inequality, and social change continue to influence mental health needs, quality care must remain accessible, culturally responsive, and grounded in respect for each individual’s dignity, values, and lived experiences. WACP is committed to advancing these perspectives through research, education, clinical practice, and international collaboration, bringing together professionals and scholars across disciplines and regions to exchange knowledge, strengthen expertise, and build meaningful partnerships.

Looking ahead, our commitment must extend beyond cultural competence to embrace cultural humility, equity, and genuine partnership with the communities we serve. Together, we can help ensure that everyone, regardless of cultural or social background, receives mental health care that recognizes their dignity, experience, and humanity. I warmly invite you to join WACP in advancing this shared vision and shaping a more culturally informed, compassionate, and equitable future for global mental health.
